The GL Cottages is committed to a sustainable future. The frequent power cuts and water outages that we experience in Johannesburg are a sign of the times. Our “green policy” includes solar power, recycling of all waste, care for our trees and vegetation, appreciation of our natural heritage and careful use of water. Thank you for helping us make this dream a reality in our small corner of the world - a comfortable and friendly resting place situated in the quiet Urania Village.
We run on a mix of City Power, solar and generator back up to ensure lighting in all areas, at all times. Outdoor lighting is all solar powered and will always be on at night. Very exceptionally you may experience no power in your room late at night or in the early morning if all power sources run out. In such cases, please switch on the extra rechargeable light you will find in your room. If you need socket power, please call reception to assist as all public spaces have full back up. Thank you for bearing with us!
We turn off geysers in unoccupied rooms. If you surprise us, you may find there is no hot water for a couple of hours - please bear with us. We ask that you do not leave room heaters turned on throughout the night. Reception can provide a heated electric blanket for additional warmth. We also have warm fuzzy blankets in the conference rooms for additional, sustainable warmth in the cold winter.
GL Cottages recycles all organic waste from the kitchen. The organic waste is turned into compost for our organic vegetable garden.
Our tap water is safe to drink. Even though GL Cottages is blessed with its own boreholes and JoJo tank, we steward all water responsibility and use it as sparingly as we can in the gardens.
We separate all our waste at source - dry paper, plastic, glass and tins - which we send to recyclers.
There is no better way to appreciate the environment than through walking. Take a leisurely stroll through the GL Cottages gardens along the footpaths. Atop the hill is a historical monument. GL Cottages staff will be happy to guide you. It is also safe to walk within the gated areas of Urania Village, but please don't carry any valuables outside the gate.
If you are staying longer than one night, we wash your linen every third day. If towels are clean, please hang them on the towel rail to be aired for reuse. If they need washing, please leave them in the bathtub.
